What is MTP ?
MTP means Medical Termination of Pregnancy. It is governed by the MTP act. It gives the right to a qualified doctor to decide if the pregnant woman can be allowed to under MTP. This decision is based on few criterions.

MTP Methods Available

0 wks – 12 wks 12 wks – 20 wks
Medical
Pills upto 49 days of pregnancy

Surgical
Dilatation, Suction Evacuation & Curettage

Surgical
USG Guided Dilatation, Suction Evacuation & Curettage
Extra Amniotic Instillation of Ethacridine Lactate
Misoprostol Instillation

Can I get MTP done at any time in pregnancy ?
NO. MTP can only be done till 20 weeks of pregnancy. After which it is illegal.

Can I get MTP done because I know the sex of the child and don’t want it ?
NO. Sex determination is illegal. Also MTP for that reason is illegal too.

Is there any risk in MTP ?
MTP is a medical procedure and so it also has its risks, which may vary with the procedure adopted.

Which is the safest method ?
As of now pills are the safest but if MTP is not successful with the pills then a surgical procedure will have to be performed and that can be unsafe.
Complications can occur in any method.

What should I do to avoid MTP ?
As always said 'PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE', you should choose a family planning method that is best suited for you rather than facing the need to undergo a MTP in the future.

What are the risks & complications of MTP ?
The risks & complications of MTP would range from Nothing, Infection, Late discharge from hospital, Perforation, Infertility, Ectopic pregnancy in future, Hysterectomy and Death.

What investigations are necessary ?
The idea of investigations is to know what problems if any is the doctor about to face in your case.
We advice you to completely comply with what your doctor asks you to do. At that time he is the best person to judge.

Can MTP be done if I come alone ?
NO. MTP cannot be done if you are alone some responsible adult has to accompany you, preferably your husband. If not any one else is OK

How much time does it take for the operation? When can we go home ?
It depends on the type of operation. The Suction & curettage operation usually takes about 10 minutes (if there are no complications). After the operation the patient is kept under observation for a few hours after which if everything is ok then the patient may be allowed to go home.

How many times can I undergo a MTP ?
This question should never come across your mind as MTP is a blind procedure and carries its own risks. You should only consider MTP in extreme cases and use appropriate Family planning methods to avoid it.

What should I do before I am going to be operated for MTP ?
Here are a few things that you should do:
+ Do not eat or drink 6 hrs before the operation.
+ If you have had anything be sure to tell you doctor and the anesthetist.
+ Be on time for admission
+ Take a good bath
+ Remind the doctor if you use contact lens, dentures, removable implants, etc.

Why Family Planning ?
The decision of family is one of the most important decisions that a couple/lady will take in their/her life. The reasons may be different in each case but the most common being:
+ Keeping a gap between two pregnancies
+ Keep a gap before the first pregnancy.
+ Lately, for unmarried women who have an active physical relation.
+ Also, in cases when a couple suspects failure of method (within 48hrs – EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION)

What is BEST for me ?
This will depend on a lot of factors like Age, Family Status, Existing Diseases & Previous Experience of using other Family Planning Methods.

What if I am unmarried or just married and do not want a pregnancy for some time ?
OC pills, Condoms or Spermicidal Vaginal Pessaries  could be the option for you

What if I have just delivered a healthy baby ?
For the first 6 weeks nothing is required. After that till about 6 months till EXCLUSIVE BREAST FEEDING is being continued there is likelihood of not becoming pregnant but than that is a risk.
+ IUD till you plan to have another pregnancy
+ Injections till about 8 months to 1 yr
(YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE ANY PERIODS TILL YOU TAKE THE INJECTIONS)
+ Condoms till you plan for another pregnancy.

What if I my baby expired within a few day of delivery ?
This is a very sorry situation for the whole family but at the same time care should be taken not to become pregnant for a while,as the mother has to recover physically and mentally
+ IUD till you plan to have another pregnancy
+ Injections till you plan to have another pregnancy
(YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE ANY PERIODS TILL YOU TAKE THE INJECTIONS)
+ Condoms till you plan for another pregnancy.

What if I do not want any other child but am not sure for now ?
You should consider a temporary method for now and something permanent later when you are absolutely sure.

What if I am sure I do not want any other pregnancy ?
You should consider a permanent method. As the risk involved in an operation is much less than the risk involved in MTP.
The risk & complications in Vasectomy (Male) are few as compared to Tubectomy or TL

Does Family Planning Fail ?
Everything in life fails and the same rule applies to family planning. Different methods have different failure rates.

If I go for an operation what guarantee do I have that it will not fail ?
NONE. There is no guarantee or warranty in any medical procedures. However the incidence is very low

If I undergo an operation and after a few years due to some unforeseen circumstances need to plan a pregnancy will it be possible ?
MAYBE. Reversal may be attempted but there cannot be any sureity that the operation will succeed.

What if I become pregnant while using some family planning method ?
Depends on what method you are using you could have the option to continue it or undergo an MTP.

Is it possible that I may never become pregnant again ?
RARELY. YES. It would depend on the method adopted for family planning.

Can I undergo MTP every time I become pregnant ?
MTP has its own Risks & Complications and we would recommend you NOT to use MTP as method Family Planning. But still whenever you become pregnant if you do not want that pregnancy MTP can be done if you fit in the MTP Act.
